The story of FOCUS: Hispanic Center for Community Development, Inc. is one of resilience, vision, and community empowerment. The organization was founded by trailblazing leaders like Dr. Jose Rosario and others. Another Hispanic pioneer was Francisco J. Morales, Chairman, Emeritus. These trailblazers not only established the FOCUS center, but also led the fight for bilingual education, creating a legacy of empowerment and progress. This mini- documentary features prominent figures in Newark, including, Newark Councilman Luis A. Quintana, Newark Councilman Anibal Ramos who also serves as the Director of theEssex County Department of Citizen Services. Other prominent voices include, President Emeritus of Essex County College Dr. A. Zachary Yamba, Joseph N. DiVincenzo Jr., Essex County Executive, Vesta Godwin Clark the Executive Director of the St. James Social Services Corp., Dr. Francisco Dillon, Chairman, FOCUS Board of Trustees, Maritza Aráuz, FOCUS Executive Director and Miguel “Don Mike” Rodriguez, among others. They share reflections on the aftermath of the 1960s riots and the powerful collaboration between the Puerto Rican and African American community to mobilize and secure access to critical resources and services. Over the years, FOCUS has evolved into a cornerstone of the community, offering a wide array of services, including food programs, after-school initiatives, senior services, and more.
